What is proprioception and why should you understand it

Proprioception is:

  • Knowing where your body is in space (think: balance, coordination and agility)
  • The use of activities that stimulate joint receptors (think: leap frog)

Why is it important to understand?

  • It helps children to feel a sense of self
  • Aids in self-regulation
  • Facilitiates success in motor activities
  • Helps with personal space
  • Offers an understanding of personal boundaries
  • Regulates appropriate engagement

How do I provide my students with  proprioceptive input?

  • Bear Hugs
  • Wheelbarrow walks
  • Frog Jumps
  • Jumping on a Trampoline
  • Playing with Play-Dough or squeezing putty
