Kinesthetic Learning Tables Help Johnson Elementary Move Minds Through Movement
Recently the Bethel Education Foundation approved the Johnson School grant for kinesthetic learning tables and they have been delivered. Kinesthetic Learning Tables (see photo) are a viable alternative to traditional desks. The tables provide the opportunity for students to engage in active movement while working. Research supports, through the incorporation of movement and exercise, human brain activity increases. The benefits of exercise and physical fitness on mental health and cognitive performance are well documented (see photo illustration the impact of movement on brain activity). Movement is good for physical feelings. By incorporating the kinesthetic learning tables in the classroom, students will be provided with movement activities thereby decreasing stress and promoting learning and positive attitudes. Further, providing students with access to movement at a table will improve students’ mood. This is caused as movement triggers the release of a number of neurotransmitters and hormones, including dopamine, serotonin, adrenaline, and endorphins, which cause students to feel happy. The result will be a positive outlook, increase in student motivation, engagement, and attention.
